San Diego video production company Sloan Productions provides services to ESPN for Outside the Lines (OTL), for a feature story on Junior Seau. In the photo, Producer Dave Lubbers is seen holding an iPad used as a teleprompter, while DP Bob Sloan shoots with a Panasonic Varicam while sliding the camera on a Dana Dolly. Adding motion to a shot increases the production value and makes it more dynamic. HMI lighting, powered by a portable generator, was used to help light the scene.
ReadyComm from Dallas TX brought us onboard to produce a live webcast for their client Johnson & Johnson. ReadyComm’s Garvin Hassell worked with Jeff Landie on all the logistics, including how to best light the room and capture sound from a live panel and audience members, as well as reinforce audio to the live audience. During the event, Jeff directed and TD/switched the 2 camera production while recording the line cut, as it was being sent live on the internet.
January 2011, New York marketing and PR firm WCG chose us to field produce their video shoot for their client Maquet’s product CARDIOHELP, which is the world’s smallest and lightest life support system for cardiac support and respiratory assistance. WCG’s Director Scott Schindler worked with DP Bob Sloan to capture the dramatic footage of the product in action while transporting patients between hospital beds, an ambulance and a helicopter. Shot on location in El Centro, CA, Bob chose to shoot on the Canon 5D DSLR camera, utilizing a cage system made by Zacuto for more stable handheld shooting. Jeff Landie served as Producer, working alongside client rep Susan Neath to arrange for all the different elements, and keep things moving and coordinated.

Sloan Productions crew spent the day in the sun at Del Mar dog beach in San Diego, shooting the 5th Annual Helen Woodward Animal Center Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon. In this photo, ESPN producer Matt Rissmiller, producing a feature segment for ESPN’s weekly magazine show E:60, interviews Doug Hokstad and his english bulldog named Dozer before their heat on Sunday. Dozer got a well deserved 3rd place in the final, behind last year’s winner Buddy, while the winner of this event was Abbie, doing the now infamous “board swap” in the finals.
This event raised a total of $93,645 in donations and helped raise awareness for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership. Dog surfing is unique in that it’s not a sport, it’s a relationship between humans, canines and the ocean. It made for a great family day at the beach for surfers and dog-lovers alike. Water DP Bob Sloan put to use a Canon 5D Mark II in an SPL water housing for capturing the dogs in the ocean, and DP Rob Amato used a Panasonic Varicam for topside footage in the specialized E:60 shooting style.

Sloan Productions is deployed by 25 year client HBO to follow the cast of HBO’s original program True Blood, interviewing and shooting B Roll during sessions of the five day International Comic-Con event at the San Diego Convention Center. In this scene, HBO producer Rob Stein interviews Deborah Ann Woll, aka Jessica Hamby, while Director of Photography Bob Sloan, using Panasonic’s Varicam with an attached ring-light, holds a steady shot and Jeff Landie records sound. Bob chooses the ring light for providing very flattering and a virtually shadowless treatment on subjects close to the camera. San Diego Comic-Con is home of the largest comic book and popular arts convention in the world! Sloan Productions constructed a set of frames to be used in multiple scenes for Major League Baseball shooting a tease for the 2010 All Star Game. Director of Photography Bob Sloan leads a Sloan Productions crew with MLB producer Darryl Martins around the Disneyland Resort in Anaheim. Panasonic Varicam & Canon 5D footage was shot over two days at three different locations, including the Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
In this photo, Bob directs personell for the shot, making sure all props are positioned accordingly. The concept behind this shot is derived from the motion tracking principle, placing markers near each joint to identify his motion by the positions or angles between the markers, a visual-effects technique that allows the insertion of computer graphics into live-action footage also known as match moving.
