Video production company Sloan Productions from San Diego enjoys another day in the sun, at the beach with the Encinitas Lions Club and San Diego Surfing Academy, who presented the annual Blind Surfing Event at South Ponto Beach in Carlsbad, California.
CBH Video out of the Chicago area tapped Sloan Productions to cover this event. Producer Anne Northrup worked with the crew to get XDCAM HD footage from the land, and Canon 5D Mark II DSLR footage in the water. CBH will produce the video as a news story to be posted to the Lions Clubs International video website, Lions Quarterly video magazine, which shares Lions inspiring stories of how they are making a difference in communities around the world. LQ is posted in January, April, July and October of each year.

Pat Weber, Founder of San Diego Surfing Academy, is the surf instructor and is in charge of making sure everyone is in good hands – his motto is ‘safety first!’ “These guys are soul food,” said Pat. “They’re not privileged to enjoy the beach every day like us. It’s amazing how they put their trust in us. They are truly lion-hearted.” – www.nctimes.com

Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon 2010
Sloan Productions crew spent the day in the sun at Del Mar dog beach in San Diego, shooting the 5th Annual Helen Woodward Animal Center Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon. In this photo, ESPN producer Matt Rissmiller, producing a feature segment for ESPN’s weekly magazine show E:60, interviews Doug Hokstad and his english bulldog named Dozer before their heat on Sunday. Dozer got a well deserved 3rd place in the final, behind last year’s winner Buddy, while the winner of this event was Abbie, doing the now infamous “board swap” in the finals.
This event raised a total of $93,645 in donations and helped raise awareness for orphaned pets while promoting responsible pet ownership. Dog surfing is unique in that it’s not a sport, it’s a relationship between humans, canines and the ocean. It made for a great family day at the beach for surfers and dog-lovers alike. Water DP Bob Sloan put to use a Canon 5D Mark II in an SPL water housing for capturing the dogs in the ocean, and DP Rob Amato used a Panasonic Varicam for topside footage in the specialized E:60 shooting style.

Director of Photography Jeff Landie leads a Sloan Productions XDCAM HD crew capturing “B-Roll” during the Health Care Fraud Prevention Summit in Los Angeles, CA, on Thursday, August 26th 2010. The meeting was hosted by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Jeff Smith of Optik Communications Group produced and directed the event. In this photo, Secretary Sebelius tours an elderly exercise class during her visit.
Last May, President Obama asked Attorney General Holder and Secretary Sebelius to lead a new effort to stamp out health care fraud, protect taxpayer dollars, and kick criminals out of our health care system. Together, they created a new Health Care Fraud Prevention and Action Task Force, called HEAT – an unprecedented partnership bringing together Cabinet-level leaders from both departments to share information and coordinate strategies. With annual health care spending rising from $75 billion in 1970 to more than $2.5 trillion today, the health care system is a bigger target than ever for fraud.

In this scene, HBO producer Rob Stein interviews Deborah Ann Woll, aka Jessica Hamby, while Director of Photography Bob Sloan, using Panasonic’s Varicam with an attached ring-light, holds a steady shot and Jeff Landie records sound. Robert Rodriguez shows off his “Machete”
A Sloan Productions crew and Cinemax teamed up for a fun filled evening on Friday during the busy San Diego Comic-Con 2010 event. Robert Rodriguez showed off his upcoming film “Machete” by filling a nearby parking lot with lowriders and custom Harley motorcycles from local San Diego bike and car clubs and served carne asada tacos out of a lunch truck to amused industry guests and members of the press along with “Machete” co-stars Danny Trejo and Michelle Rodriguez. Special featured clips from the movie were projected on the side wall for all to view, a star studded cast in the movie included: Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Lindsay Lohan, Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Steven Seagal. Cinemax posted the video on their Youtube Channel.
“Machete” is based on the ‘fake’ trailer in Robert Rodriguez’s 2007 ‘Grindhouse’, featuring Danny Trejo and Jeff Fahey reprising their original roles. Machete (Danny Trejo) is a renegade former “Mexican Federale”, who roams the cities, towns, and streets of Texas looking for work after a shakedown from a drug lord called Torrez (Steven Segal).

Director of Photography Bob Sloan leads a Sloan Productions crew at Torrey Pines Golf Course, shooting a product demo for Foresight Sports and their new golf ball launch monitor the GC2 Smart Camera System, the next generation technology for golf simulation and ball flight analysis. Sloan Productions then edited a short demo, that was posted to You Tube. Outdoors, the GC2’s exclusive self-leveling technology provides verifiably accurate results on every surface and on every shot. Indoors, the GC2 produces the most accurate measurements of ball characteristics at launch. At less than 10 inches long and under four pounds, the GC2 moves from outdoor to indoor as easily as it fits in your golf bag.

Three Dimensional Video Production
Bob’s Current Conclusions about 3 Dimensional Video Production
In April 2010, Bob attended the Digital Cinema Summit at NAB which was almost exclusively about 3D in production. Bob has since viewed many hours of programming, and spent many days talking to experts about 3D. Bob then let this “percolate” in his production brain. Here are his thoughts.
Production of 3D Content
• 3D production requires an entirely new visual language than we use in the 2D world.
• Shooting 3D is not a “look at the monitor and if it looks good shoot it” medium.
• Bad 3D or improperly produced 3D can have a negative affect on the viewer.
• Improper use of current tools in production can be harmful to production personnel.
Adoption of 3D Broadcasting into the Home
• Discovery/IMAX/Sony & ESPN are currently launching 3D networks. The success of 3D in the home relies on enough people buying 3D systems fast enough to support an ongoing economic model.
• 3D viewing in the home will be more of a dedicated home theater experience opposed to the more passive style of watching.
•3D video games may drive more sales of 3D receivers than broadcasted content.
• This is an exciting time to be in the business.
With out a doubt, good 3D is a Very Cool viewing experience.
Many thanks to the following people for their input and support:
