San Diego video production company Sloan Productions provides services to ESPN for Outside the Lines (OTL), for a feature story on Junior Seau. In the photo, Producer Dave Lubbers is seen holding an iPad used as a teleprompter, while DP Bob Sloan shoots with a Panasonic Varicam while sliding the camera on a Dana Dolly. Adding motion to a shot increases the production value and makes it more dynamic. HMI lighting, powered by a portable generator, was used to help light the scene.

Director of Photography Jeff Landie leads a Sloan Productions XDCAM HD crew capturing “B-Roll” during the Health Care Fraud Prevention Summit in Los Angeles, CA, on Thursday, August 26th 2010. The meeting was hosted by HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder. Jeff Smith of Optik Communications Group produced and directed the event. In this photo, Secretary Sebelius tours an elderly exercise class during her visit.
Last May, President Obama asked Attorney General Holder and Secretary Sebelius to lead a new effort to stamp out health care fraud, protect taxpayer dollars, and kick criminals out of our health care system. Together, they created a new Health Care Fraud Prevention and Action Task Force, called HEAT – an unprecedented partnership bringing together Cabinet-level leaders from both departments to share information and coordinate strategies. With annual health care spending rising from $75 billion in 1970 to more than $2.5 trillion today, the health care system is a bigger target than ever for fraud.

Behind the Scenes with Simon Tabron
Shooting behind the scenes of still shoot (Smashbox Studios) for ESPN Magazine with BMX rider Simon Tabron, at at Tony Hawk’s location – vert ramp in Vista, CA. While Simon did some of his iconic moves, including his “gut killer” or something like that where he puts the handlebars in his ab area and planes out his body, balancing it in a hoizontal position. The other move was “the surfer”, where he stands with one foot on handlebars and one foot on seat and rides it like a surf board. Then we did a sit down interview in the vert ramp with Field Producer – Malinda Adams.
Known primarily for his vert riding, 540 variations and a solid 900, Simon Tabron turned pro in 1990 winning three consecutive Vert World Championships (2002-04) and is the only current Vert competitor to ride with no brakes. His smooth style produced the first back-to-back 900s in competition history at X Games ’07, where he earned his second silver medal. Tabron has added a more than a few awards to his trophy case, including Gravity Games gold in ‘02 and seven X Games medals – silver in 2007 and ‘09 in addition to five bronzes along the way. A Liverpool, England, native, Simon has made the move to Southern California to cut down on travel time and enjoy life by the beach.

Getting Ready for Some Football
In preparation for ESPN’s telecast of Monday Night Football in San Diego, Director of Photography Bob Sloan leads a Sloan Productions high definition crew and shoots the helmets of the opposing teams. The San Diego Chargers hosted the Denver Broncos during ESPN, ABC, and Disney’s 40th year production of the most popular football telecast of each football season. By hiring local qualified production crews in San Diego, ESPN is able to control costs as opposed to traveling a crew across the country. This shot was used in the opening of the Monday Night Countdown show that precedes the actual telecast. ESPN Bullcam
These are my favorite assignments, innovate a way to make it work. On this assignment for ESPN‘s E:60 program, the producer asked for a dynamic shot of a bull charging the camera in High Definition. Combining research, technology, and innovation Bob used an Iconix HD-RH1 camera with a 2.2mm lens mounted in a custom camera mount to shield the camera from the impact and protect the bull from harm. It worked flawlessly.

The High Definition Palette
High Definition Cameras allow a more versatile palette to the photographer allowing more ability to “paint” with filtered light. In the older system of NTSC it is impossible to portray some colors. Director of Photography Bob Sloan shoots an interview for ESPN with boxer Shane Mosley.
