Working with Children

February 28th, 2010

"Video Production Company San Diego"

Capturing intended responses from children has a unique set of challenges.  For one thing, children are much smarter than most adults give them credit for.  Acting silly or stupid is a dead giveaway to most kids that the production is lacking authenticity.  In this photo, a Swift Media producer asks questions of children for an internal communications video.

Canon 5D Mark II Production

February 26th, 2010

San Diego VideoChris La Palm directs while Bob Sloan shoots with the Canon 5D Mark II.  One of the Canon 5D’s advantage for a DP is that it has a full frame sensor which allows for very shallow depth of field to help isolate your subject from the background.  You also have the entire line of Canon lenses to choose from, from 14mm to 600mm.

Redrock Micro’s M2 Encore

January 13th, 2010

Video-San-DiegoI’ve been using the Redrock Micro M2 Encore imaging system with a Sony Z1U HDV camera for some of our clients and am very impressed with it.  It has minimal light loss, about a third of a stop.  We have made it a standard offering with our HD crews in San Diego and Los Angeles..  We use Zeiss prime lenses with the M2 yielding super sharp images with shallow depth of field.  Shallow depth of field is virtually impossible with standard small imager cameras.  In the photo above right, Peter Ryan of Bridge Street Productions, conducts an interview for their client IBM.  To learn more about advanced production techniques, contact us about our HD crews in San Diego.

Professional Profile-Leslie Ann Nichols

December 11th, 2009

Leslie Ann Nichols                                                                                                                             It isn’t often that I get to work with someone who helps set the standard for talent, ability, professionalism, and genuine character.  Leslie Ann Nichols of Junkdrawer Media, Philadelphia, produced and coordinated the video production for Hall Media, Philadelphia of the Taking Care of Your Diabetes conference in San Diego last month.  Sloan Productions provided the crew and equipment, 5 cameras, etc.  It is my opinion that truly great producers and coordinators have a particular gene for it that most of us don’t.  Leslie does admit to being a tad anal, but she handles everything with a sense of calm and good natured humor.  When she has to get tough, she does that appropriately as well.  I wholeheartedly endorse her.  She’ll make a great contribution to any project she works on!  She and her company have some really great projects going as well.

Monday Night Football on ESPN

October 27th, 2009

hd-crew-san-diego-discovery.jpgIn preparation for ESPN’s telecast of Monday Night Football in San Diego, Director of Photography Bob Sloan leads a Sloan productions high definition crew and shoots the helmets of the opposing teams.  San Diego hosted the Denver Broncos during ESPN, ABC, and Disney’s 40th year production of the most popular football telecast of each football season. By hiring local qualified production crews in San Diego, ESPN is able to control costs as opposed to traveling a crew across the country.  This shot was used in the opening of the Monday Night Countdown show that precedes the actual telecast. Sloan Productions provides professional production crews in San Diego to networks, independent producers, and corporations.

The Importance of Good Makeup

September 15th, 2009

website video production san diego, san diego video, discovery channel high definition crewNow that we’re in a high definition video production world, more attention must be paid to the quality of the makeup job and artist.  High definition images have much greater resolution than our old NTSC system showing more flaws in the skin; aging, wrinkles, etc.  On a recent shoot for a corporate website video client in San Diego, our makeup artist was Melissa Street, www.EpicMakeUP.com.  Melissa has been a professional makeup artist for over twenty years and has worked on feature films; Terminator, Aliens, etc.  She used a product that I hadn’t seen before that helps keep facial perspiration, (sweat), from ruining the makeup job.  The product is a spray that in effect “seals” the pores temporarily.  Called Skindinavia Makeup Fixing Spray, it did a great job during our shoot as we had to use heavy lighting to balance the  background scene out the window of the office we were working in.  Sloan productions has been producing high definition content and website video production in San Diego for over 30 years, www.sloanproductions.com.
