Canon C300 shoot – Jewel concert for Starwood Hotels

October 19th, 2014

Canon-C300-Jewel-concert-video-production

Producer Howard Weisman with Forest Hills Pictures out of Connecticut called on Jeff Landie and Sloan Productions to provide a 4 person video production crew to shoot all events surrounding a members-only concert for Starwood’s Preferred Guests.  SPG members used points to acquire tickets to this special event: singer Jewel performing a private concert at the US Grant Hotel in downtown San Diego, CA.

The shoot began with two camera interviews with Jewel.  One of the goals was to optimize the look by achieving a shallow depth of field to soften the backgrounds.  Other pre-concert events included a behind-the-scenes tour, meet-and-greet with Jewel, and a pre-concert cocktail party featuring noted bartender and mixologist Greg Seider out of New York.  The main event was a solo performance by Jewel on acoustic guitar.  Jeff and crew shot events using two Canon C300 cameras.  Lenses included Canon L Series f2.8 zooms as well as faster prime lenses to help with some of the low-light scenes.  Additional concert footage was gathered using a GoPro for a 2nd angle.  Howard Weisman used his extensive producing experience with the subject matter to expertly move the crew through all events.

Titleist Performance Institute updates Golf Channel series

February 15th, 2013

Sloan Productions provided all video crew and production support for the 9th consecutive year for “Titleist Performance Institute“, a 10-episode series that airs on Golf Channel in spring 2013.  This year marks a departure from the legacy “Golf Fitness Academy” show, seeking to better display all the different aspects of the TPI facility and program, once again starring TPI co-founders Dr. Greg Rose and Top 100 Golf Instructor Dave Phillips.  Where past years shows were all about fitness and shot in the gym, this year we took the production mobile to go all around the state-of-the-art facility, highlighting instruction on the practice tee, bunkers, rough and greens, as well as inside the newly-revamped gym.  Director Bob Sloan and DP Jeff Landie helped come up with the new shoot workflow, creating efficient and nimble shooting and lighting scenarios so the show could easily move from inside to outside, while still achieving the goal of shooting all episodes in 5 shoot days.  Exterior lighting consisted of large HMI instruments.  Longtime Producer Jen O’Neal oversaw the shoot and the post production.  Golf Channel’s Bridget Cugle coordinated, and Executive Producer Kevin Schultz oversaw creative to make sure the programs once again met and exceeded the expectations of flagship sponsor Titlest.   Shot in High Definition, four Sony XDCAM HD PDW-700 camcorders were used, and a full lighting and grip crew helped transform TPI’s facility into a television studio for the show.  Time lapse exterior shots of the facility were shot by Bob Sloan, to help create a new and dynamic show opening segment.

Impressive Producer – Amy Grogan

November 14th, 2011

Amy Grogan - Impressive Producer

We had the pleasure of working with Amy Grogan last week.  Amy is a producer for Intersport out of Chicago.  We were shooting a project for Intersport’s client, Cadillac at the Maderas country club in Poway, CA.  We wanted to give her a plug because she really knows what she’s doing, is very realistic, and a whole lot of fun, which makes for exceptional production days.  We shot the project primarily in the Varicam tape format and a Canon 5D Mark II for in-car footage

Both Jeff and I highly recommend her!

Gillette “Sweat for Greatness”

October 25th, 2011

In October 2011, Turner Sports called on us to shoot Steve Wampler’s feature video for Gillette’s “Sweat for Greatness” competition on Sports Illustrated.com. Steve and two others are vying for votes as the most worthy “ordinary person who achieved extraordinary things.” Steve has Cerebral Palsy and lacks the use of his legs, and his achievement was climbing El Capitan, the 3000’ sheer granite wall in Yosemite National Park.  The feat required a specialized climbing chair, with Steve hoisting himself up by doing roughly 20,000 pull-ups over the 6 day climb.  For our shoot, DP Bob Sloan worked with Producer Billy Tucker and Marketing Manager Lauren Shannon and employed two Sony XDCAM HD cameras, HMI lights, and Cameraman Jeff Landie mounted a GoPro camera on a rock wall for an “over the top” view.  View the video here.
