To produce effective corporate video it’s important to understand all facets of a company or organization; it’s products, clients, business model, strengths & weaknesses, and most importantly it’s mission. By understanding a client company in depth, it is then possible to craft each project from an accurate and supportive perspective.
Underwater Production Services
Underwater production has it’s own unique and specialized requirements. Since 1985, Sloan Productions has served it’s clients with underwater production services. In this project, an exercise video for Speedo, Bob utilizes an underwater housing for a Betacam SP camcorder, recording in the camera and powering the camera from the surface while the director and client monitors the picture from the pool deck.
Golf Channel: Aircraftcarrier
Definitely one of the coolest shoots we’ve done. For The Golf Channel’s production of “Breaking 90”, we flew out to the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln for two days and a night to chronicle the show’s subject Juston Cooper during his “normal” life. Working around the tight quarters of an aircraft carrier is a challenge, but the “coolness” factor of the shoot made it easier. Pictured left to right are Dean Reinmuth, Justin Cooper, Jeff Landie, Bob Sloan, and Jay Kossof, producer for the Golf Channel.
Production Coordination
Productions large and small all have commensurate amounts of necessary administration that require skill and organization. Turning a garage into her office, associate producer Janie Brown keeps track of scripts, budgets, schedules, locations, props, cast, and crew for a series of industrial films and DVD’s.
Motion Capture with Dustin Pedroia
Shooting a “motion capture” session with Red Sox player Dustin Pedroia, Director of Photography Jeff Landie leads a Sloan production crew. San Diego is home to several video game producers all of whom employ motion capture to create more realistic game titles. In this photo, Pedroia wears a suit with markers near each joint to identify his motion by the positions or angles between the markers. The markers are then “captured” as he goes through his movements and are recorded by multiple cameras fixed around the stage. Sloan Productions provides professional production crews in San Diego to networks, independent producers, and corporations.

Production in Surgery
Working in the operating room has some very specific challenges. One is positioning a camera above the surgeon to see his point of view. Sloan Productions has executed many single and multiple camera surgery shoots including oral, open-heart, & plastic surgery.
Working with Children
Capturing intended responses from children has a unique set of challenges. For one thing, children are much smarter than most adults give them credit for. Acting silly or stupid is a dead giveaway to most kids that the production is lacking authenticity. In this photo, a Swift Media producer asks questions of children for an internal communications video.
Canon 5D Mark II Production
Chris La Palm directs while Bob Sloan shoots with the Canon 5D Mark II. One of the Canon 5D‘s advantage for a DP is that it has a full frame sensor which allows for very shallow depth of field to help isolate your subject from the background. You also have the entire line of Canon lenses to choose from, from 14mm to 600mm.
Professional Profile-Leslie Ann Nichols
It isn’t often that I get to work with someone who helps set the standard for talent, ability, professionalism, and genuine character. Leslie Ann Nichols of Junkdrawer Media, Philadelphia, produced and coordinated the video production for Hall Media, Philadelphia of the Taking Care of Your Diabetes conference in San Diego last month. Sloan Productions provided the crew and equipment, 5 cameras, etc. It is my opinion that truly great producers and coordinators have a particular gene for it that most of us don’t.
Leslie does admit to being a tad anal, but she handles everything with a sense of calm and good natured humor. When she has to get tough, she does that appropriately as well. I wholeheartedly endorse her. She’ll make a great contribution to any project she works on! She and her company have some really great projects going as well.
